Formed in 2002 in Halifax NS, Wintersleep has built a loyal fan base around a solid body of work and a relentless touring schedule. They have toured extensively in North America, the UK, Ireland and Europe, sharing stages with Frightened Rabbit, The Maccabees, Wolf Parade, The Hold Steady, Paul McCartney and Pearl Jam among other greats. They’ve even found themselves on stage on the David Letterman Show.
They have received a Juno Award, a Much Music Video Award and produced the chart topping single “Weighty Ghost”. Their most recent album, Hello Hum, produced “In Came the Flood,” a jubilant infectious track that charted for weeks in the top ten Alternative Rock charts in Canada. After a lengthy 2013 UK and North American tour with Frightened Rabbit that closed off the touring for their fifth LP, “Hello Hum,” the band took a year off to write and take care of family.
They regrouped in the late summer of 2014 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to record at the legendary Sonic Temple. As if there wasn’t enough seaside air to be found in Halifax, for the final 10 days of tracking the band rented a few microphones and pre-amps and a cottage in Kingsport NS, located a few feet from the edge of a cliff that overlooked, and literally jutted out over, the Minas Basin. It was in this setting that they tracked the majority of the vocals and added the finishing details – and swam their hearts out.
“The Great Detachment” begins with the floor stomping, heart-warming proclamation that is “Amerika”, and continues assuredly, unflinchingly into a vast expanse of rock and roll and slow burning balladry that is by now a Wintersleep signature. Wintersleep has again teamed up with long-time collaborator and co-producer Tony Doogan; pairing his energetic, live-off-the-floor production approach this time around with the eclectic mixer duo Gus Van Go and Werner F (The Stills, White Horse). The forthcoming LP is scheduled for release in early 2016 via Dine Alone Records.
