THE DEARS, eine Rock’n’Roll Band aus Montréal, ist das Lebenswerk von Murray A. Lightburn. Als Sohn einer jazzaffinen Famile, wurde Lightburns Songwriting vom neunziger Rock und einer breiten Palette von Gospel, Soul und Popmusik geformt.
Die Band wurde 1995 gegründet und veröffentlichte 2000 ihr erstes Album, „End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story“. Ihr orchestraler, dunkler Popsound und ihre dramatischen Live Shows verankerten THE DEARS fest in der aufkommenden kanadischen Indie-Renaissance. 2001 und 2002 veröffentlichten sie die EPs „Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique“ und „Protest“, sowie eine Kollektion von unveröffentlichten Songs – „Nor the Dahlias“. 2003 brachten Sie ihr zweites Album „No Cities Left“ auf den Markt und starteten ihre internationale Karriere mit einer Reihe von hochgelobten Shows bei SxSW‘ 04. „Gang of Losers“ wurde 2006 veröffentlicht und von der Presse mit guten Kritiken gefeiert.
Die Musik von THE DEARS wurde häufig als ein Mix von The Smiths und Serge Gainsbourg beschrieben, Lightburns Stimme in Verbindung gebracht mit Morrissey und Blur’s Damon Albarn. Die Komplexität der Musik und der Arrangements wurde außerdem mit Radiohead, Jethro Tull und Genesis verglichen. Die starken Live Shows von THE DEARS wurden in Vergangenheit außerdem umschrieben als“…es ist, wie als würde man Gott ins Gesicht schauen.“
„Gang of Losers“ wurde 2007 für den Polaris Musik Preis nominiert, der Nachfolger „Missiles“ wurde 2008 veröffentlicht. Das fünfte Studioalbum von THE DEARS, „Degeneration Street“, wurde 2011 ebenfalls für den Polaris Musik Preis nominiert. Ihr neuestes Projekt „Times Infinity“ wurde im Thee Mighty Hotel2Tango in Montréal aufgenommen und soll auch in Kürze in Europa erscheinen.
Plants and Animals are a Montreal-based trio that began playing together as kids, emerged on the international scene in 2008 and have developed a varied cult following ever since, built this on the shoulders of their self-produced records, their intense live show, or both—depending on who you ask.
They have been nominated for big awards. They have appeared on major radio and television programs. They have opened for household names and headlined many tours of their own around North America and Europe. In 2013, they decided to slow down.
By slow down, they meant make music the way they used to. It was the beginning of what would be an on-and-off recording process stretched out over two years. It was a time of rest, as the story often goes, for a band that had seen plenty of touring and not enough home. They slept in their own beds and made their new album through nine seasons and the thick of life. Through births and deaths, most notably—magnificent sunrises, shattering sunsets and the days between. Their new LP is called Waltzed in from the Rumbling. It is a dance of days.
